The Kents Hill snowboard team is designed to work with athletes who are just learning how to compete in the sport all the way through to athletes who are competing at the National (USASA) level. Most of our competitions are “slope style”, but we do have opportunities for half pipe, border cross and even slalom and giant slalom competitions if students are interested. Most of our competitions are in our high school league (MAISAD), but each weekend our top snowboarders will compete in the USASA events at Sugarloaf and Sunday River (these are designed for those elite athletes attempting to qualify for the “Nationals”.) The team is made up of a wide range of riders, from students who are still learning new tricks, to those who can do 720 spins, “rodeo 540’s”, “cork 540’s” and a variety of other tricks.
We are fortunate to have our own ski hill on campus where we have a variety of rails and boxes, as well as a 30 foot table top jump as well as some smaller features. The hill has snowmaking and a full sizes piston bully groomer, so we are blessed with some of the best snow in the area. The team practices every day on our hill and travel to the major areas of Sugarloaf and Sunday River on every weekend – both are just over an hour away from campus. The team has their own locker room in the Liz Cross Mellon Lodge where students keep their equipment and clothing. There are also benches set up for students to tune and wax their snowboards.
Team members have been MAISAD champions, have been ranked as high as #1 in the country in USASA and have gone on to coach snowboarding at Sugarloaf in Maine, Sugarbush in Vermont, as well as Vail in Colorado. Overall, however, the focus of the program is for students to improve their snowboarding ability and have fun in the wonderful outdoor setting we have here in central Maine.
