All In for Kents Hill School

  • Varsity Alpine Skiing

    2018 - 2019
    Head Coach: Stephen Bell

Kents Hill is unique among Northern New England prep schools in that we provide on campus training for alpine skiers. The O’Connor Alpine Training Center at Kents Hill School features snowmaking and professional grooming, lights for night skiing, and digital timing. In addition, the Liz Cross Mellen Lodge features a tuning room, equipment storage area, two reception and meeting rooms with a fireplace and kitchen, and a deck that displays one of the most beautiful views in the area. Kents Hill is also fortunate to have two of New England’s top ski mountains, Sugarloaf and Sunday River, just over an hour’s drive away. The O’Connor Alpine Center and the local mountains enable us to provide both experienced and aspiring racers with a top notch training and racing program.

We ask our experienced racers to challenge themselves at the USSA and FIS levels while encouraging new racers to work on developing the skills necessary to compete at a higher level. The alpine program begins the season with dryland training. We have an outstanding fitness facility and turf complex that we utilize for strength training and plyometric activities that are essential for success and safety on the slopes. Once on the snow, we concentrate on the fundamental skills and specific techniques that are important to improving as a competitive skier. In addition to participating in MAISAD league races, roughly half of the Kents Hill ski team travels throughout New England competing in the USSA program.

The Kents Hill alpine ski program prides itself on individual attention that is provided by an exceptional coaching staff, a staff focused on maximizing each skier’s potential while maintaining the highest standards of safety. The program is led by Steve Bell in his 12th year as the Director of Snowsports and head coach of the varsity alpine ski team. Coach Bell has been coaching at the high school level for 22 years in New Hampshire, Maine and Michigan and he has worked with athletes from J-5 to J-1 USSA and FIS levels. In addition, he has worked as a certified ski instructor in New Hampshire and Colorado. Coach Bell has been a member of USSA since 1992 and he served as Chairperson of the Maine Alpine Racing Association from 2002-2007.

The boys’ alpine program won the MAISAD league title in 2008 and 2009, and the girls’ program has held the MAISAD title for the past three consecutive years.  Individual skiers have also found success at the NEPSAC level, including an 8th, 9th, and 12thplace finish in the New England championships just last year.

If you have an interest in attending Kents Hill School and competing on the alpine ski team, please contact Coach Bell at sbell@kentshill.org
