The Learning Skills Program

With the establishment of the Learning Skills Program in 1979, Kents Hill School became one of the first independent schools in the nation to offer academic support tailored to the needs of our individual students. Our faculty are dedicated to working with students with a variety of learning styles and have extensive experience with students who struggle with executive function, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, processing, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. However, not all students who utilize the Learning Skills Program have a specific diagnosis.

The Learning Skills Program offers two levels of customized support based on individual academic needs. Teachers follow the Landmark College academic coaching model and work closely with traditional classroom teachers to ensure that appropriate accommodations are offered and learning needs met. Their empathetic and individualized approach transforms lives by instilling the confidence and skills necessary to succeed in higher education and beyond.

The Program is located in the Akin Learning Center, a facility that offers welcoming spaces for one-on-one work, independent study, subject-specific evening study sessions, workshops, and informal gatherings.
"When I meet with other Kents Hill parents, they all say that their students were helped at the school in ways they found difficult to provide at the time. The experience in the Learning Skills Program made a big difference in their children’s maturity. We all describe it as transformative.”
