Cockrell Appointed Head Boys Varsity Ice Hockey Coach and Associate Director of Admissions

For nearly 200 years, athletics at Kents Hill School have served as a catalyst for young people to practice and develop the values, character, and confidence necessary to succeed in all aspects of life. As Head of School, I am deeply committed to recruiting coaches who not only understand and internalize this responsibility, but bring it to life.

Throughout his 16 plus year career in independent schools, Larry Cockrell has dedicated himself to transforming the lives of young people through a focus on excellence, values, and character. I’m honored to welcome him back home as Head Boys Varsity Ice Hockey Coach and Associate Director of Admissions, effective July 1, 2018.

Larry most recently served as Head Boys Varsity Ice Hockey Coach and Associate Director of Admissions at Governor’s Academy. Prior, he led the Boys Varsity Ice Hockey program at Kents Hill School for 10 years, guiding his teams to four post-season appearances including winning the NEPSAC Division II Championship in 2008 and placing runner-up in 2013. This commitment to excellence extends to player recruitment and development, having coached players that have gone on to compete in professional hockey and NCAA Division I, II, and III programs. More important than his exceptional record, however, is his commitment to develop young men not only to be great athletes, but great people guided by a set of core values. Upon graduation from Norwich University, Larry served in the United States Navy as a commissioned officer. He and his wife Tiffany have three children – Jake, Thaney, and Jared – all graduates of Kents Hill School.

As we approach Kents Hill School’s bicentennial in 2024, I will strive to recruit and retain exceptional educators who will lead us and our students into the future. The appointment of Larry after a national search coupled with the announcement of Meadow Davis as Assistant Head of School for Student Life, Gretchen Bean Bergill as Director of College Counseling, and the Academic Transformation Team that will reimagine our academic program signals that Kents Hill is poised to enter its third century with the people, skills, and competencies that delivering transformational, student-centered experiences demands.
