Huskies Varsity Hockey Drops Close Game to Stanstead

During the course of the season, the boys varsity hockey team has had a propensity to play close games against all opponents and Sunday’s game against the Stanstead Spartans at the Alfond Athletics Center was no different.  The Spartans scored on the first shift of the game when Shaun Mahoney took a pass from Devin Derrier and beat KH goalie Max Machioni on the low glove side.  The Huskies regained their composure and played the next few minutes even.  However, KH took a penalty at the 9:20 mark and Stanstead quickly capitalized when Derrier assisted on a Max Kubank goal.
KH looked a lot more determined in the second when they started the period with numerous quality scoring chances.  At one point Graham Hassan completed a slick pass to Miles Kirby across the goal mouth and it looked like Kirby would score on the open net.  However, Spartans goalie Greg Orosa came across and Kirby’s shot just nicked Orosa’s flailing arm; the puck flew harmlessly over the goal.
A couple of minutes later, Stanstead scored, again on the power play, when Ryan Hopkins put it in with Derrier again getting the assist.  At that point, the Huskies started their comeback when Youssef Chaouachi snapped a shot from the left face-off dot that beat Orosa cleanly on the high glove side.
The Huskies came out strong in the third and capitalized at 11:05 when Chase Gaudioso took passes from Jake Harshman and Ryan Nolte to make it 3-2.  KH had several good chances in the next five minutes but Orosa made some big saves and then Mark Haborik added an insurance goal at the 6 minute mark to put the game away.
